Call for applications: Good Hart Artist Residency programme in the US
Composers, songwriters, visual artists and writers all over the world and at any age of their career are requested to submit applications for the Good Hart Artist Residency programme at Harbor Springs, Michigan, US.
- The application deadline is 11 January.
Each artist will be housed in a private residence with a detached studio and provided with a $500 stipend, a kitchen stocked with basic foods, a few home-cooked meals from local hosts and a quiet setting along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Tucked into the woods along the “Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Route”, residents can walk into the village of Good Hart, enjoy Lake Michigan and the nearby sand dunes, and explore Northern Michigan’s inland lakes and wetlands. The Good Hart Artist residency generally hosts one resident at a time, offering each artist the time, space, and quiet to focus and create.
Requirements:
- Applicants must be pursuing their art, writing, or composing as a professional career.
- Applicants are considered on the basis of their submitted work, interest in the programme, and proposed community engagement.

Accommodation
Residents are provided with a one-bedroom, fully-furnished contemporary house, a short walk from the beach of Lake Michigan. Accommodations include:
- Master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, linens provided.
- Living room with double-sized fold-down futon.
- Open loft with reading area and queen-sized sleeper sofa.
- Fully equipped kitchen.
- Full bath with roll-in shower on main floor, and second-floor half bath.
- Washer and dryer, laundry soap provided.
- Patio and outdoor furniture, including grill and fire pit.
- WiFi.
- Acoustic guitar, keyboard (Yamaha P-125), and use of a bicycle.
Studio
- Approximately 14 by 24-foot studio space, a 10 by 10-foot outdoor covered porch, 9 by 8-foot studio hydraulic lift door, basic tools, bathroom/storage area.
- Natural and track lighting.
- Worktables.
- Easels including a travel/field easel.
- Basic miscellaneous art supplies, drop cloth, mineral spirits, rags, waste disposal.
- Studio is available for resident use May-October.

The residency Includes:
- A 10-21-day residency stay in a private home (selected residents are provided a window of time within which they have the flexibility to schedule a stay between 10-21 days in length).
- Residencies between May-October have use of a detached, private studio space and basic art supplies.
- All food provided, including a fully-stocked and well-equipped kitchen, homemade baked goods, and locally sourced ingredients.
- $500 stipend.
- Solitary time in a scenic environment, to work, reflect, and recharge, as well as the opportunity for community engagement.
Applications must include:
- Resume/CV.
- Statement of intent: applicants should describe their art, what inspires them, and what they plan to work on during the residency if selected.
- Brief summary of a proposed community engagement event or educational workshop to be offered during the residency in collaboration with a local partner.
- The applicant should indicate in their application if there is a specific partner they would like to work with; otherwise, based on the description of the proposed community event, the Good Hart Artist Residency will try to find a local non-profit partner that aligns.
- Once a candidate is selected they will work with the Good Hart Artist Residency and a non-profit partner to plan and coordinate their community event. Note: Some time slots are reserved for specific partnerships.
- Application fee of $25. (If experiencing financial hardship, please contact us regarding an application fee waiver).
- Composers shall submit three digital music samples, which may include links to online content and/or live performance videos. Note: Collaborating artists must each submit an application. Collaborating artists who are awarded a residency are provided with shared housing and studio space.
- Visual artists shall submit images of 6-9 examples of artwork. Images should include title, medium and creation date for each work submitted. It is recommended that recent work be submitted.
- Writers shall submit three to five pages from a current work in progress and an excerpt of no more than five pages of a completed work. Samples of previously published work must include a link to the published work or information for accessing the published work. Projects may be in poetry, short stories, novels, essays, plays, screenplays, and/or creative nonfiction. Writing submissions must be in English, and easily accessible without fee by the jurors.
