BCUC, Barnaba and Maua Sama to showcase at ACCES 2022
The Music In Africa Conference or Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases is pleased to confirm the addition of three new musical acts that will perform at the fifth edition of the pan-African music conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 24, 25 and 26 November 2022.
The three acts are South African band Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) as well as Tanzanian musicians Barnaba and Maua Sama, who join nine previously announced acts representing different musical styles and cultures from across the African continent.
Barnaba and Maua Sama will showcase at ACCES through a partnership between Ziiki Media and ACCES organiser the Music In Africa Foundation.
The three will showcase at Brake Point Makumbusho (Village Museum) alongside Sholo Mwamba (Tanzania), SinaUbi Zawose (Tanzania), Oumar Konaté (Mali), Flying Bantu (Zimbabwe), Joyce Babatunde (Cameroon), Vitali Maembe & Watupa Mawe (Tanzania), TaraJazz Zanzibar (Tanzania), Tofa Jaxx (Tanzania) and Kalam (Burkina Faso).
Coming from Soweto, BCUC is known for moving audiences – both physically and emotionally. The six-piece ensemble, whose sound is rooted in southern African percussion and is described as ‘indigenous funky soul’, is on a mission to question the common worldview of Africa. BCUC takes the audience on an intriguing journey to the secret world of modern Africa; it wants to rectify western assumptions and show the post-apartheid South Africa from a young, contemporary perspective.
Maua Sama will be at ACCES both as a performer and keynote speaker, with her conference session slated for 25 November at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre. Her singing career started when she was a young girl. In 2013, she was discovered by Mwana FA, who was struck by her vocal ability. Later that year, the two artists collaborated on a track called ‘So Crazy’, and in 2015 she released her first single ‘Let Me Know’, which introduced her to the industry. It was in 2018 that her song ‘Iokote’ featuring Hanstone propelled her music career in Tanzania and beyond. That same year, she was nominated for the Best Female Award at the Soundcity MVP Awards. Her latest project is the seven-track Cinema EP, which features guest artists such as Ali Kiba and Jux.
Barnaba, meanwhile, is a revered Tanzanian singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and record producer. He was born and raised in Dar es Salaam and began his musical career after honing his skills at the Tanzania House of Talents (THT) hub. He joined THT in 2005 and a year later released his debut track. The award-winning musician is one of East Africa’s best-selling artists and has released four albums and more than 100 singles to date.
The three-day ACCES conference will feature a dynamic pool of more than 60 local and international speakers, businesses and showcasing artists from over 50 countries. The music trade show offers a strong programme that includes industry talks, networking sessions, workshops, exhibitions, awards and music performances.
