Spotify Wrapped: Black Sherif is most streamed Ghanaian act
Spotify has released Wrapped, its end-of-year round-up for 2022, which highlights the top Ghanaian artists and songs.
Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, said the report, which is based on streaming data from the company’s more than 456 million users, casts Ghanaians as “welcoming of international influences as local ones and those from the wider African continent.”
The DSP’s 2022 data points to three main deductions. Firstly, there is a significant increase in local music consumption, as the report found a 193% surge from 2021 to 2022.
Secondly, singer Black Sherif, the country’s biggest breakout star of 2021, has also become the most dominant Ghanaian artist of the past year, particularly propped by his single ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ and debut album The Villain I Never Was.
Finally, Nigeria continues to enjoy a significant share of listening habits in the country, with acts like Burna Boy, Tems and Ayra Starr all securing spots among the most streamed music in the country.
Black Sherif, Sarkodie and Kwesi Arthur emerged as the top three most-streamed Ghanaian acts. Black Sherif and Kwesi Arthur also secured the top two spots in the list of most streamed albums of the year, with The Villain I Never Was and Son Of Jacob, respectively. King Promise came in third with 5 Star.
Black Sherif topped the list of most streamed Ghanaian songs with ‘Kwaku The Traveller’, followed by Kelvyn Boy’s ‘Down Flat’ and Camidoh’s ‘Sugarcane (Remix)’ featuring King Promise, Mayorkun and Darkoo.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy ranked as the most streamed artist in the country this year, with Black Sherif ending the year as the second most streamed artist locally. The two also clinched top spots for the most streamed albums of the year.
Ayra Starr closed the year as the most streamed female artist in Ghana, followed by Tems and Gyakie.
