Ghana: Too Spyce wins season 11 of Mentor reality show

Mentor aims to spotlight and equip emerging Ghanaian artists to elevate their careers. 

Too Spyce takes over the crown from reggae/dancehall artist DSL who won last year's edition. The achievement makes her only the second female artist to emerge tops in the competition, securing a prize package including the winner’s trophy, 40 000 cedi (about $4 400), and a return ticket abroad with $500 spending money.

She also secures 100 000 cedi in airtime on Media General platforms across TV, radio and digital, and sponsored products.

“Alhamdulillah, we made it,” Too Spyce said, appreciating her fans’ support along the journey. “This is for me and for you.”

A student of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Too Spyce was born Christiana Owusu Ansah, and her spirited craft unfolded primarily via rap. Over the show, however, she also demonstrated with her performances a malleability across other genres, notably reggae-dancehall.

Ahead of her big night, which saw her render an original composition titled ‘Alhamdulillah’, the musician noted that the competition had taken her craft to the next level.

“The journey has been great, things are going on well. My stagecraft has really improved a lot. Now I know how to hold a microphone, own the stage and engage the crowd.”

3 Group general manager Francis Doku said: “By participating in a well-structured reality show like Mentor, young talents get to mingle with a lot of people, and this helps them to change and develop their basic characteristics. In addition to helping work on their craft, they learn the rudiments of the trade.”

Meanwhile, first runner-up Marckel, won 20 000 cedi, while second runner-up Tiah took home 10 000 cedi.
