Burna Boy to perform at Champions League final in Istanbul
Afrobeats star Burna Boy will play the UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show by Pepsi that will precede the competition’s 2023 final at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, on 10 June.
The news comes on the heels of the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker co-headlining the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend game with fellow Nigerian artists Tems and Rema at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
UEFA revealed the line-up via its official Twitter account, sharing a clip of Burna Boy confirming that he will be playing the gig. In the video, the singer expressed his excitement by saying, “Come on, let’s go! I will be performing at the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show by Pepsi.”
“The UEFA Champions League Final is the standout date of the club football calendar, and Pepsi prides itself on marking the occasion with the very best entertainment spectacles,” Pepsi’s senior director of global marketing, Gustavo Reyna, said, adding that a co-headliner will be announced soon.
“As a huge football fan myself, I know it doesn’t get any bigger than the UEFA Champions League,” Burna Boy said: “That’s why I’m so excited to be performing on the Pepsi stage at this year’s final. Music and football are the ultimate combinations, so you already know I’ll be bringing the vibes and making magic in Istanbul. The world ain’t ready for what we have in store!”
UEFA marketing director Guy-Laurent Epstein noted that the show forms a “significant part of our joint efforts with Pepsi, providing an incredible opportunity to reach new and younger audiences with some of the biggest names and rising stars in music. We’re excited to showcase a line-up of talented artists at this season’s final in Istanbul in what is sure to be an energetic and memorable performance.”
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ became the fastest Afrobeats song to be certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America after surpassing 500 000 units in 25 weeks and reaching the 1m unit mark within nine months.
