Ghana: Stonebwoy’s foundation to undertake boreholes drilling project
Ghanaian reggae and dancehall star Stonebwoy has announced that his charity organisation the Livingstone Foundation will undertake a boreholes drilling project this year in towns that have been impacted by illegal mining activities.
The musician founded the charity organisation in 2017 to promote philanthropic activities in Ghana, focusing on equal access to education, accident survivor healthcare, community and mental health advocacy, and youth empowerment.
The charity organisation says this new drive aligns with its commitment to realising the rights and needs in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet. It aims to provide clean and sustainable freshwater sources to address the water scarcity caused by these activities.
The first phase of the drilling project commences in Borkor Awukukope, a farming community in Takoradi in the Western Region. The community currently relies on the River Pra as its primary source of drinking water. However, due to human actions, especially illegal mining, access to water has been severely hindered.
“Our team visited the community early this year to meet with the elders and discuss our intention to provide clean, sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address their needs and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity,” the Livingstone Foundation said in a statement.
In addition to the borehole drilling project, the foundation is actively involved in other initiatives, notably the BHIM Workshop, where participants receive training in various areas such as small-scale farming activities, entrepreneurial development, food and agro-processing, and fashion production. These workshops aim to empower individuals and equip them with valuable skills for their personal and professional growth.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Stonebwoy celebrated Mother’s Day by visiting widows in his native Ashaiman community to offer them support and let them know they have not been forgotten.
