MOBO Awards: Wizkid up against Fuse ODG record and Jay Z
The recently released nominee list for the 2017 Music of Black Origin awards, also known as the MOBO awards, has Nigerian popstar Wizkid turn up in two categories.
The ‘Ojuelegba’ singer is nominated for Best African Act, a category he has won twice before: first in 2011 and again in 2016. He is also up for the Best International Act category, a first for a Nigerian artist.
In the Best African Act category, he squares up against fellow Nigerians Davido, Mr Eazi, Wande Coal, Maleek Berry, Tekno and the only female nominee Tiwa Savage. Also nominated in the category are Ghanaian acts Eugy, Juls and Sarkodie.
Wizkid’s nomination in the international category, which might be seen as recognition of his push into the western market, has thrown up a globally distinguished list of artists for the singer to compete against. The category also has Jay Z, Drake, Migos and others up for the award.
Should Wizkid get either of the awards he is up for, he would have equalled Fuse ODG’s three MOBO awards win, which the UK-based act achieved with wins in the years 2013 through to 2015.
Also out of the African Act category, Nigerian artist Maleek Berry is up for the Best Male Act award. He is up against Skepta, Stormzy, Giggs and others in that category.
