Kenya: Listen to Vijana Barubaru single Katunge
Kenyan music duo Vijana Barubaru have released a single titled ‘Katunge’ featuring industry newcomer Shad Mziki.
- Vijana Barubaru.
The song, which is now available for streaming and download, was produced by Ihaji Made It and its video was directed by Rahim the Film King.
Featuring a catchy chorus and a memorable hook, ‘Katunge’ tells the story of two young lovebirds whose relationship goes awry when one partner goes to university in the city.
Leaving their child under the care of her boyfriend, the girl, named Katunge, heads out to pursue a degree with a promise to return once her studies are over.
With the blessing of their families and community, the boy fundraises and even sells some of his property to finance the studies, but shortly after reporting to school Katunge cuts all contact. As such, the jilted lover is left with endless questions, and he pours out his heart about his sad and, no doubt, relatable experience.
Vijana Barubaru is made up of Mshairi Spikes, a rapper and spoken word artist, and Tuku Kantu, a seasoned singer and songwriter.
The group announced itself to the Kenya music scene with their hit song ‘Sasa Hivi’ released early this year. Known for their melodious choruses and thoughtful lyricism, Vijana Barubaru believes music is a means of communicating and capturing a snapshot of what society was, is and could be.
In addition to creating music, the members of Vijana Barubaru are involved in mentorship programmes targeting young upcoming artists.
