SA: Vusi Nova wins two SAAFMAs
Afro-pop sensation Vusi Nova was the big winner at the 2017 edition of the South African Afro Music Awards (SAAFMAs) at Birchwood Hotel in Johannesburg yesterday.
Nova, whose career has been on an upward trajectory since the early 2000s, was victorious in the Best Afro Male Artist and Best Afro Album categories. The rest of the winners went home with one award each. The SAAFMAs also awarded Yvonne Chaka Chaka and the late Ray Phiri with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their outstanding contribution to the South African music industry.

SAAFMA chairperson China Mpololo told Music In Africa that the organisers were overwhelmed with the outcome of Thursday’s awards ceremony.
“We are very happy with this year’s event,” he said. “If you compare this year’s awards with the inaugural event, you can see there is a big difference and improvement. We are impressed with attendance of the nominees.
“What also made us happy is the platform that we created for young artists. We are convinced that the event was positively received and accepted by the industry and we are looking forward to build it and make it even more interesting.”
“We keep on improving all the time and introducing new things. There is a boy called Sihle who was mesmerising the audience; people should watch out for him, he gave a killer performance.”
Mpololo said they had already started preparing next year’s awards. “The venue has already been confirmed. The beauty about next year’s event is that it will be inclusive and despite the invitations there will be a potion that will allow the public to attend,” he said.
