Zim: Tuku’s new AIDS-awareness video
Fastjet has released a music video for Oliver Mtukudzi’s ‘Holiday’, which will be used to launch a partnership between the African airline and international aids organisation (RED).
The song will be available for download on major streaming services and as a caller tune in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique. All proceeds from the song will be donated to non-profit organisation Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
"The more sales we have, the more funds we can generate to continue spreading the word about HIV prevention,” the ‘Bvuma’ hitmaker said. “The appeal in the song lies in the cross-generational impact that I hope it will have
“We have all been impacted by the disease in some way or another, and a continued concerted global effort to support prevention efforts has to be sustained."
Mtukudzi has been involved in HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns since the 1980s. In 1987 he released the song ‘Stay With One Woman’ in partnership with the World Health Organisation. The musician’s most popular HIV/AIDS song is ‘Todii’ from the 1999 album Tuku Music. He was also a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.
In ‘Holiday’ Mtukudzi speaks about flying away and finding freedom in the sky. The video provides information on the spread of HIV and an intro text reads: “Every two minutes a teenager is infected with HIV. AIDS-related illnesses are the leading cause of death among women of a reproductive age.”
Fastjet CEO Nico Bezuidenhout said: "It is our duty as Africans to continue contributing to the growth of our continent while ensuring a sustainable future for everyone. Partnering with (RED) and Oliver Mtukudzi for the 'Holiday’ project is our first step as a brand toward contributing to an AIDS-free generation."
