Call for applications: SAMRO Overseas Scholarship 2018
The Southern African Music Rights Organisation Foundation (SAMRO) is calling on composers to apply for the 2018 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition. Successful applicants will compete at Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg from 13 and 18 August.
- Prince Bulo is the 2014 winner of the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship for composers.
The deadline for applications is 31 May.
The competition is open to music students and professionals from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland, who are not older than 32 years of age. Each applicant must be within the field of jazz and Western art music.
To apply, applicants must fill an online form that is available on the SAMRO Foundation website.
Each applicant must provide the following:
- A brief CV including a list of compositions.
- A brief biography of no more than 150 words, suitable for inclusion in the competition programme or publicity material.
- Most recent academic record or degree/diploma certificate.
- A description of plans for further study or master classes abroad and envisaged career path (max 300 words).
- Details of any other current study awards and bursaries.
- A recent high resolution colour digital photo (head and shoulders only).
- A certified copy of your identity document.
- Two current testimonials.
- Submission of a portfolio accompanied by MP3s of the works as detailed under submission of portfolios.
Applicants should take note of the following additional guidelines:
Jazz applicants:
- Category A: A short work for jazz trio (piano, bass and drums), including suitable sections for improvisation.
- Category B: A work for a standard 18-piece big band.
- Category C: A work in the clazz category and a work incorporating Indigenous African Music (IAM) styles and instruments.
Western art music applicants:
- Category A: A short work for a standard piano trio (violin or flute, piano & cello).
- Category B: A work for chamber orchestra (minimum 14 players) or for standard orchestra.
- Category C: A work in the clazz category or a work incorporating IAM styles and instruments.
The SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition was established to assist artists to further their musical studies. Every year, the SAMRO Foundation interchangeably awards applicants in the following areas: composers, singers, instrumentalists and keyboard. The composer’s scholarship was last awarded to Prince Bulo, a bassist from KwaZulu-Natal in 2014.
