Five questions for Nigerian musician Lil Gaga
Ghana-based Nigerian singer-songwriter, producer, and sound engineer Lil Gaga gained mainstream notice in 2010 with ‘Show Me’. He hasn’t looked back since. Formerly trading by the stage name Gasman, the musician traces his career beginnings to Port Harcourt, and explores an array of genres, with a main focus on the Afrobeats, Afropop, R&B and world genres.
In a recent interview with Music In Africa for our Emerging series, the musician highlighted his evolving sound, the influence of his Nigerian heritage and his unique path as an independent artist.
MUSIC IN AFRICA: What influences shaped your music and what inspired you to pursue a music career?
LIL GAGA: I grew up in the 1980s listening to hip hop, but as a child I didn’t fully connect with much of the music around me. Instead, I found greater enjoyment in classical music and the music featured in videogames. Throughout my life, my musical tastes have never been swayed by what’s popular. Rather, I’ve always followed what resonates with me on a personal level.
How does your Nigerian heritage influence your music, despite living in Ghana?
The Nigerian music industry is considered to be one of the most vibrant and influential in Africa, but it is difficult to determine definitively whether it is the strongest or best. Ghana and South Africa are also known for their vibrant music industries, and each country has its unique styles, genres and artists. Despite living in Ghana, my Nigerian heritage profoundly influences my music. However, I often incorporate Ghanaian elements into my songs.
What challenges have you faced as an independent artist, and how have you navigated the industry thus far?
Financial constraints and lack of support have been significant challenges. Despite these hurdles, I persevere by prioritising music production over personal expenses and relentlessly promote my work. Navigating the industry as an independent artist requires creativity, hard work and strategic planning. I focus on honing my craft, networking, managing finances efficiently and exploring innovative ways to monetise my music.
Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and producing music?
When I sit down to write, I often find myself delving into my personal experiences, particularly for love songs. I strive not only for authenticity but also for relatability. My goal, at the end of the day, is to forge a powerful connection through shared experiences and emotions. My song ‘Life’, for instance, was inspired by my struggles and the feeling of being let down by people when I needed them most. It reflects my desire to overcome obstacles and help others in similar situations. I hope the record inspires listeners to persevere through challenges and remain true to themselves. It’s about resilience and celebrating victories with those who have supported you throughout your journey.
Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re excited about and how do you see your music evolving in the future?
I just released a new single titled ‘Crazy Love’. Beyond that, I aspire to collaborate with the likes of Stonebwoy and Duncan Mighty. I envision my music transcending borders and reaching global audiences.
