Africa Month: Google and AU partner on #DiscoverMyAfrica campaign
Google and the African Union (AU) have teamed up to launch the #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge, which celebrates African culture and heritage throughout May.
The initiative encourages YouTube content creators from across Africa to share short videos portraying various aspects of African life, like music, art, food and fashion, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica.
The AU chairperson’s youth envoy, Chido Mpemba, said #DiscoverMyAfrica aligned with a vision for a digitally enabled Africa. She said that “partnering with Google fosters creative expression and dialogue on content responsibility, digital preservation, and AI’s impact on Africa’s creative industries.”
As part of the programme, Nigeria will play host to exclusive premieres, networking sessions and workshops to provide practical insights for music professionals, filmmakers and content creators to enhance their digital presence and engagement.
Additionally, during Africa Month, YouTube is hosting various events to spotlight Afrobeats and amapiano, and has unveiled two dedicated playlists titled Africa’s Next Wave and Africa Superstars to spotlight emerging and established acts.
“We are committed to supporting the diverse voices and talents that make up Africa’s creative landscape,” YouTube head of music for sub-Saharan Africa Addy Awofisayo said. “These initiatives provide valuable resources and platforms for African filmmakers, musicians and content creators to share their stories and connect with global audiences.”
#DiscoverMyAfrica is the latest addition to Google’s annual efforts in honouring African culture and heritage. Past efforts have included the Africa Day Concert hosted by YouTube Music and the creation of an Africa Day playlist featuring trending songs from across the continent.
Meanwhile, Apple Music is joining the Africa Month celebrations by spotlighting Afrobeats. The celebration kicks off with the introduction of cover stars on the Afrobeats Hits playlist, starting with Nigerian artist Fireboy DML, who just released his new song ‘Everyday’.
“As the first artist to be featured on this Apple Music playlist, I feel incredibly honoured and grateful,” Fireboy DML said. “ Since 2019 I’ve had incredible support from Apple Music and I’m sure the whole African music scene can say the same. I’m excited to see where this leads and what it will do for the culture.”
Apple Music has also announced The Story of Afrobeats in 20 Songs editorial feature, which highlights the genre’s global evolution. A new Viral Afrobeats playlist and an Afrobeats category page with latest releases and essential albums are expected later this month.
