Spotify names Zoë Modiga EQUAL Africa ambassador for June
Spotify has named South African jazz and soul artist Zoë Modiga as its EQUAL Africa’s June ambassador.
The announcement follows Modiga’s latest album Nomthandazo, which was released in April. The project features powerful, soul-stirring performances that showcase her remarkable range and emotional depth.
“The intricate arrangements and soulful melodies are a testament to Modiga’s dedication to creating music that resonates deeply with her audience, and we are excited to spotlight her as our EQUAL Ambassador for this month,” Spotify’s artist and label partnerships manager for South Africa, Jodie Tabisher, said.
Modiga’s previous works have earned her numerous accolades, including multiple South African Music Awards nominations and a growing international fanbase. Her ability to infuse her music with cultural richness and emotional depth has cemented her as a leading voice in contemporary African music.
Growing up in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, surrounded by music and community, Modiga discovered her passion and purpose. “I remember always wanting to impact people the same way those records did,” she said, adding that she was inspired by African legends like Jabu Khanyile, Letta Mbulu and Brenda Fassie, among others.
Modiga revealed the surprising truth about her sensitive nature, hidden behind a tough exterior. “I’ve grown a hard shell out of necessity and survival, but I’m a deeply sensitive and empathetic person.”
Boasting albums including Yellow: The Novel and Inganekwane, Modiga’s music is a soulful reflection of her experiences, which she described as soulful, spirited, cultured and inspired by modern African music that celebrates the human experience. With a message of embracing one’s true self, she encourages dreamers to be defiant and unwavering: “You are a gift from and to the universe, and we are waiting for you to share with us.”
Spotify’s EQUAL programme supports female artists, giving them a global platform through playlists, content and the EQUAL hub, which generated over 31 billion editorial streams across 1 billion listening hours. EQUAL has added more than 6 900 female artists to the EQUAL playlist and has supported over 1 000 ambassadors in their home countries including South Africa.
