Ghana: MUSIGA and SIC Life renew insurance partnership

Established in 2021, the collaboration, according to MUSIGA president Bessa Simons, ensures that members who are subscribed to the policy are covered during times of necessity.

The development, confirmed recently, also aims to address frequent public appeals for financial assistance by musicians during illness, easing burdens on their families.

Simons noted that over the years, members from across the country have benefited from the scheme, which provides GHC5 000 (about $330) to families of deceased MUSIGA members along with other benefits such as permanent disability support, child benefits and parental benefits.

“Accidents and emergencies are unannounced and they confront us when we least expect, hence the need to be protected against such unfortunate occurrences,” Simons said.

MUSIGA general secretary SK Agyemang added that the scheme is a “buffer against unforeseen challenges and also encouraged all musicians to sign up for the scheme."

SIC Life corporate group business representative Andrew Adu-Asante commended MUSIGA on the initiative.

“For a long time, MUSIGA has been aiming insurance that supports the welfare of members so I was so glad when we got a call from SIC Life,” Simons said when the policy was first rolled out in 2021. “We believe that our numbers will grow and more members will sign on.”

More than 200 MUSIGA members signed up for the insurance scheme when it was launched.

For MUSIGA, the renewal follows a two-day workshop in Tamale, focusing on enhancing members’ skills in using digital tools for revenue generation. The organisation has also announced the establishment of a technical resource centre at its Accra headquarters, intended to serve as a hub for ongoing education and assistance.
