Ghana: OliveTheBoy drops Wonda Boy single
Ghanaian pop act OliveTheBoy has released his new single titled ‘Wonda Boy’, which is available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The track was produced by Beatz Vampire, with whom the singer has exclusively collaborated since gaining mainstream notice with his 2023 hit ‘GoodSin’.
According to the singer, who currently boasts over a million monthly listeners on Spotify, ‘Wonda Boy’ celebrates triumph, self-assurance, and the newfound respect that comes with success.
“The lyrics express happiness and pride in my current status and influence. The song reflects on past struggles and being overlooked, but emphasises that those times are behind me…others are now curious about my success and want to know, but I feel those people are not capable of understanding the journey.”
‘Wonda Boy’ arrives on the heels of the release of the attendant video for ‘Asylum’, one of the focus tracks from the deluxe edition of his Avana EP released back in March.
The song also heralds a rumoured new EP due next year. Speaking to Music In Africa recently about the format his next collection would take, OliveTheBoy dispelled speculation that he was readying his debut album. “I haven’t really thought of an album yet,” he explained. “I don’t think I have any reason to drop an album yet. Maybe I’ll be hit by something in life, and then I’ll start thinking of making an album about that particular thing, but right now, everything is calm, thus, an EP is more likely.”
Born Joel Osei Bonsu, OliveTheBoy’s work traditionally sits at the intersection of Afropop and R&B. In August 2023, he inked a record deal with Sony Music’s Columbia Records via Bu Vision, following his inclusion in Apple Music’s Up Next programme. His hit ‘GoodSin’ won Afrobeats Song of the Year at the recently held Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2024.
