SA: Janet Jackson pulls out of DStv Delicious Festival 2024
US pop legend Janet Jackson will no longer perform at this year’s DStv Delicious Festival at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 21 and 22 September. The pop icon had been announced as the headline act, alongside Grammy Award-winning artist Jill Scott.
This announcement comes in the aftermath of the news of the passing of Tito Jackson, Janet’s elder brother and a member of the legendary family outfit, The Jackson 5.
“It is with heartfelt understanding that we announce Janet Jackson will no longer be able to headline the DStv Delicious Festival due to pressing family commitments following the recent passing of her brother, Tito Jackson,” the festival organisers have announced. “We send our deepest condolences and support to Janet and her family during this time of mourning.”
The organisers have also shared communication from Janet’s management stating: “Janet's brother Tito passed away this past Sunday. For obvious reasons, Janet has to cancel her performance at the DStv Delicious Festival to be with family. Management is making plans to come back next year. Janet also wishes to thank all of her South African fans for the warm and heartfelt support she’s receiving at this difficult time.”
Janet Jackson was scheduled to be Saturday’s headliner, with Jill Scott closing the festival on Sunday.
The organisers have acknowledged the disappointment of the fans who were looking forward to Janet’s performance. “We understand that many fans were excited to see Janet Jackson perform, and the festival’s management team is actively working on securing a suitable international replacement headliner to ensure an unforgettable experience.”
The organisers further announced arrangements to accommodate festival goers who would like to exchange their Saturday tickets for Sunday. Ticketmaster will have that option available on the site between Tuesday, 17 September at 20:00 CAT and Wednesday, 18 September at 23:59 CAT. Saturday tickets, however, remain valid for those who would like to retain them.
This year’s edition is celebrating 30 years of democracy and the festival will expand its focus to highlight not only outstanding food, art and fashion, but also the role of music in advocating for civil liberties through a showcase titled 30 Years of Creative Freedom Show.
The festival will feature local acts Thandiswa Mazwai, Sipho, ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse , Soweto Gospel Choir, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Cassper Nyovest, among others.
