Future Awards Africa 2018: Simi, Folu Storms among winners

The event, which “celebrates young people between the ages of 18 and 31, who have made outstanding achievement in the year under consideration”, took place at the Balmoral Convention Centre at Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.

Simi won the Future Awards Prize for Music. She was in a category that included her frequent collaborators Adekunle Gold and Falz, among others. 

The 'Smile For Me' singer was recognised for “tweaking her sound to suit her new persona as an independent artist straddling the lines between pop and deeply introspective songwriting”. Her 2017 album Simisola was critically acclaimed and hosted a series of well-received singles including ‘Joromi’, ‘Owanbe’ and ‘One Kain’. 

Media personality Folu Storms won the Prize for On-Air Personality (Radio) for her work on Smooth 98.1FM in Lagos. Born Foluwake Ogunkeye, she emerged a top-3 finalist at the MTV Base Africa VJ Search a few years ago. One of her popular shows on radio combines commentary on news stories with the promotion of songs, many from artists without the means to attract mainstream attention.

"Winning #TFAA Tosyn Bucknor Prize for On-Air Personality of the Year 2018 was special, so thank you to everyone," she tweeted. "The outpouring of support and love has been immense."
