Bongani Givethanks, born Bongani Glen Sibanyoni in Mabopane, Pretoria, is a pioneering force in contemporary music, whose artistic journey exemplifies versatility, cultural fusion, and dedication to music as a form of storytelling and social commentary. He started as a self-taught pianist and evolved into a multifaceted artist, with skills spanning sound design, music production, vocal performance, songwriting, bandleading, and entrepreneurship. His work embodies a dynamic fusion of genres, capturing the essence of South African music while incorporating electronic elements.
Central to Bongani's career is his collaborative spirit. He has worked with groups like New Dawn and Rhythm Kulcha Afrika and artists such as Fakazile Nkosi and Khan Khaliii, navigating a wide spectrum of styles including Neo Soul, Gospel, House Music, African jazz, and alternative music. His constant genre exploration reflects his adaptability and eagerness to push creative boundaries.
In 2020, Bongani formed his own band and pioneered a genre he calls "African Creative Music." This innovative blend of South African jazz, mbaqanga, traditional melodies, and electronic sounds showcases his boundary-breaking approach to music. His performances have graced notable stages like Smoking Dragon Festivals, The Music Imbizo, Market@TheSheds, and OSS Music Festival, leaving a lasting impact on audiences through his culturally rich and contemporary sound.
Bongani's commitment to community engagement is exemplified by his initiative, THEJAZZINJECTION, which brings music workshops and performances to underserved areas like KZN Utrecht, Soweto, and Mabopane. His focus on live music preservation and nurturing young talent positions him as both a mentor and a catalyst for change within his community.
As the director of Mvumo Productions, a Pretoria-based music production company, Bongani continues to support artistic creativity and professionalism. The company manages a wide range of projects, from album releases for Jazzed OUT Trio to collaborations with poets like Xitha Makgetha, as well as theater productions such as Tokologo and Letters Of Hope. Through Mvumo Productions, Bongani fosters new talent and provides a platform for artists to grow and excel.
Bongani's talent has also earned him international recognition. He contributed to a 15 Years compilation album by German label Jazz & Milk and collaborated with Brazilian Jazz Trio Caixa Cubo on their album Agora. Additionally, he completed a prestigious music residency supported by the U.S. Government called OneBeat, a program that brings together global musicians for creative collaboration and civic engagement.
Bongani’s discography includes the Indoda EP and the single “Feel Good Friday,” both of which reflect his broad musical influences and creative range. His work is a harmonious blend of genres, creating a unique and cohesive sound that resonates with diverse audiences.
