The Standard Bank Jazz Festival, which forms part of South Africa's National Arts Festival, has confirmed the line-up for the 2019 edition of the event in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) from 27 June to 7 July.
International artists billed include Nils Landgren (Sweden), Fredrik Noren (Sweden), Too Many Zooz (US) and Coco Zhao (China)
Confirmed local acts include Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mafikizolo, Marcus Wyatt’s The ZAR Jazz Orchestra, Shane Cooper’s Mabuta, Jeff 'Siege' Siegel, Mandla Mlangeni, Freshlyground, Ernie Smith, Shannon Mowday and Shaun Johannes.
“As always, audiences can expect breathtaking performances from the talented student musicians of the Standard Bank National Schools Big Band, conducted this year by renowned trombonist and educator Justin Sasman," a statement reads.
“We are excited to offer a barometer of where our country’s jazz is at right now, in all its complexity and beauty, with fascinating input from the rest of the world. We’re looking forward to hosting musicians from around the world for a set of diverse performances, ranging from big bands and intimate soirees, to jazz parties and youth performances. We will be celebrating this vibrant art form in Makhanda as well as preparing our young musicians for when it’s their turn to take over.”
Standard Bank head of sponsorship Desiree Pooe said the festival had played an important role in contributing towards social change.
“This year, the Standard Bank Jazz Festival and National Arts Festival gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how a cultural event can be part of a sustainable solution to a social and developmental challenge," Pooe said.
"Standard Bank will show our African heart and we request the public to do the same in our drive to provide sustainable solutions to the water shortages in Makhanda. It is even more crucial this year to support the festival and ensure it is successful.”
