Watch: 'You and I' by Kate Bashabe
Rwandese artist Kate Bashabe has released ‘You and I’, which challenges the Rwandan community to come together in an outpouring of generosity and help out those that are in need.
‘You and I’ also features singers The Ben, Yvan Buravan, Christopher, Andy Bumuntu and Mani Martin.
Socially conscious songs are hard to come by these days. However, 'You and I’, which is composed in English and Kinyarwanda, challenges the well-off to practice selflessness and donate to various charities.
According to Bashabe, the song is part of a charity initiative spearheaded by the artists to visit families and individuals with special needs. On 8 July, the five artists will visit and donate basic materials to patients at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali.
“I like to help needy people, but unfortunately some of these people seem to have lost hope, and not sure of their future, or the future of their children,” Bashabe told the New Times.
“Some of the people I support ask me, 'Well, you’ve supported us today, but we do not know what the future holds for us.'”
Singer Buravan also challenged musicians to use their status to give back and help others. “Singing is a talent that we were given, with no price, and I am convinced that we can use it to bring a positive change to all music-lovers and anybody who has the heart to help.”
