Ghana’s T-Roy to hold masterclasses in Johannesburg, Kigali
UK-based Ghanaian DJ and producer T-Roy will host workshops, discussions, masterclasses and performances in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Kigali, Rwanda, from 2 to 7 and 8 to 12 September respectively.
The visit, titled Journey Across the Black Atlantic, is aimed at fostering connections in the local music scene with relevant industry players such as DJs, producers, musicians, promoters, event managers and journalists. The event series is an initiative of Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition, Music In Africa, J&B Hive, Boston City Campus and Concerts SA.
T-Roy, who is also an MC and owner of the Broadcite Music label, would create “an immersive experience which includes workshops, masterclasses, peer discussions, meet-and-greet sessions, community outreach, media engagements and live performances,” a statement reads.
“The Journey Across the Black Atlantic project challenges the idea of the historical slave trade route and flips it as the music travels back into the continent to become a reimagined sound, a new culture called Afrogroov. Driven by the belief that all music is African music, DJs and producers are thus the new historians and storytellers that blend the past and present to take us on an audio journey that not only reclaims but also highlights African heritage and influence on world music.”
The director of 11PM Creative Company, Qhakaza Mthembu, said: “We are excited to be hosting T-Roy on this fantastic music connections project, which we hope will be a blueprint for more projects in the future. We are also stoked to have partnered with so many amazing organisations to make this happen again demonstrating how we can build shared value through collaborations.”
Moshito's Sinamandla Kwepile said: "Moshito is thrilled to host T-Roy at the Emendy Multimedia Institute on 5 September and also at the AMPD studios on 7 September. He will also be performing at MTV Base showcase night at Republic of 94 in Braamfontein on 6 September. As Moshito we are proud to be a part of this project that will contribute to the growth of the music industry as a whole."
T-Roy is known for the selection of music that is released on the Broadcite Music catalogue. He is also credited for producing remixes for various FM and online radio platforms.
