Call for applications: SAST senior sound engineer, lighting designer
The South African State Theatre is calling on interested candidates to apply for the sound engineer and lighting designer vacancies at its offices in Pretoria.
Senior sound engineer
The successful candidate will perform some of the following duties:
- Taking responsibility for the management and delivery of all sound needs and requirements for productions and associated projects.
- Overseeing the organisation of sound requirements or in-house productions and rentals.
- Overseeing the sound department team including administration.
- Recruiting and managing freelance sound technicians, engineers and crew.
- Training and identifying training programmes for fellow department members on current systems ad mixing consoles.
- Planning and supervising of the maintenance of sound equipment and infrastructure.
- Keeping up to date with current sound technology and advising on new sound equipment purchases.
- Ensuring compliance with all health and safety procedures and regulations.
- Attending production meetings, programme meetings, read-throughs and rehearsals.
- Working with the sound designer of individual productions to grasp the production’s sound design and needs.
- Providing costing for individual productions’ sound requirements, working in conjunction with the production manager.
- Running sound set-ups, technical rehearsals and strikes.
- Creating production schedules in conjunction with the production manager.
- Recruiting, managing and scheduling sound engineers and technicians in consultation with the production manager.
- Working shows as sound operator, programmer or engineer.
- Working as designer or associate designer for in-house productions and events if required.
Preferred minimum education
- National diploma specialising in sound.
Experience required
- Five years of experience in sound design/engineering.
- Two years supervisory experience.
- Knowledge, skills and critical competencies.
- Excellent knowledge of current sound equipment and practices.
- Ability to read and understand ground plans and technical drawings, AutoCAD or similar.
- Computer literate.
- Ability to lead and manage a team.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Driver’s licence and own transport.
- Team player.
- Ability to handle stress.
- Experience in rigging sound equipment, using analogue and digital sound desks and using Qlab.
- Sound design and mixing live sound for theatre and music experience.
Lighting designer
The successful candidate will perform some of the following duties:
- Take responsibility for the management and timely delivery for all lighting requirements.
- Maintaining working lighting inventory and equipment within the various theatres.
- Assisting and advising outside productions with regards to their lighting requirements.
- Managing and overseeing the lighting department team including administrative responsibility relating to inventory or management of the lighting crew.
- Recruiting and managing freelance lighting technicians, operators and crew.
- Training or identifying training programmes for members of the lighting department on current lighting systems and lighting desks.
- Planning and supervising the maintenance of lighting equipment and infrastructure.
- Keeping up to date with current lighting technology and advising on new equipment.
- Compliance with all health and safety measures.
- Attending production meetings, progress meetings read-throughs and rehearsals.
- Working with creative teams of individual productions to grasp the production’s lighting design.
- Providing costing for individual’s productions lighting requirements working in conjunction with the production manager.
- Running lighting set-ups, technical rehearsals and strikes.
- Creating production schedules in conjunction with the production manager.
- Recruiting, managing and scheduling lighting operators and technicians in consultation with the production manager.
- Programming of lighting desks in all spaces.
- Providing lighting design services for in-house productions and events.
Preferred minimum education
- National diploma specialising in lighting.
Experience required
- Five years of experience in lighting design.
- Two years supervisory experience.
Knowledge, skills and critical competencies
- Be comfortable with working at heights.
- Ability to lead and manage a team.
- Excellent knowledge of current lighting equipment and practices.
- Experience in rigging and focusing lighting equipment.
- Lighting design experience.
- Thorough knowledge of MA lighting consoles and dimmers.
- Ability to read and understand ground plans and technical drawing.
- AutoCAD/Computer literate.
- Driver’s license and own transport.
