Rachel Suttle
Bio
Rachel Suttle is a South African musician, instrumentalist and teacher with passion for African Musics. Her main performance instruments include marimba, djembe, kamale-ngoni and vocals. She also has experience in uhadi bow, mbira instruments, orchestral percussion and classical piano.
Suttle is the Artistic Director at Marimba Jam- a leading South African-Marimba teaching company in Cape Town, South Africa. She is responsible for heading up their Academic Program, establishing curriculum for their academic, outreach and extra-mural programs.
Suttle is the author of the Marimba Jam Syllabus for the South African Diatonic Marimba that allows students to take this instrument as their practical instrument to matric as part of subject music in South Africa. This syllabus is designed to provide a practical music curriculum that is relevant to the context of the South African student. She is also the co-author and a facilitator of the Marimba Jam Teacher Training Course.
Her qualifications include a BSc with majors in Mathematics and Physics (UNISA), Honours in African Music Performance (UCT, SACM), Music in Africa Instrument Building Course 2020, Trinity Grade 8 Piano and an ARSM in Voice, as well as her PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) from the University of Cape Town.
