Call for applications: Arts residency in Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Culture is accepting applications for its inaugural six-week Albalad residency programme in Jeddah.
Albalad supports the creative development of exceptional art practitioners through fully funded residencies that provide dedicated time, space, considered collaborations and a supportive working environment.
Successful applicants will be housed at the UNESCO-listed Jeddah Historic District (JHD). The location gives residents direct access and opportunities to encounter and interact with Jeddah’s community and to become familiar with the city’s customs and diverse cultures.
Who can apply?
The programme is open to Saudi-based and international artists, curators and art writers. The primary languages spoken are English and Arabic.
Albalad will include:
- Talks by artists and guests, visits to exhibitions openings, artist studios and other experiences, in addition to visiting events happening in Jeddah.
- Weekly lunches with the local community to tackle subjects pertinent to the artists’ research.
- Open studios.
- Lectures, panel discussions and workshops by the residents, and Saudi-based interdisciplinary guests at the residency space that is open to the public, as well as at partner universities.
The Albalad residency will provide the following:
- Round trip flight.
- Hotel accommodation for the duration of the programme.
- A stipend of $1 800.
- Production funds of up to $4 000 for those who select in their application the production residency option.

- Recording studio
- Green screen studio
- Cinematic equipment
- Fab lab
- Printmaking
- Printers (large scale)
- Dark room
- Carpentry workshops
- Sewing machines
- Pottery kiln
- Library
- Computers equipped with design and editing software
- Laser-cutting machines
