Call for applications: Felabration Afrobics Dance Contest
Felabration, the annual celebration of the life and music of Fela Kuti, has announced a call for applications ahead of a dance contest inspired by Afrobeat music.
The contest is designed to encourage and popularise Afrobeat dance styles, globally. Its introduction was to make popular internationally and locally dance styles created by Afrobeat creator Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
And according to a statement by the organizing committee of Felabration, the group of dances that accompany music in the Afrobeat genre “is Fela’s way of eternally passing African Dance styles to the world.”
An integral part of the annual Felabration festival, the Afrobic contest gives winners with the opportunity to perform their winning dance styles on the festival stage.
All Contestants are required to visit the official website to sign up. Deadline for signing up is 20 August. All entries will then be collated and a date fixed for the initial auditioning that will produce the best dancers would be held. They will then move on to the next stage of the competition. These auditions will take place at the popular venue New Afrika Shrine on the Lagos mainland, while on Lagos Island, sessions will take place at Freedom Park.
The final contest, however, will be held exclusively at the New Afrika Shrine on a date that will be announced. Nonetheless, the contest will be wrapped up before the commencement of the main Felabration events, which has been scheduled to start on 15 October and close six days later on 21 October.
Judges for the various stages of the competition are Segun Adefila, founder of drama group Crown Troupe, and renowned dancer and dance instructor Adedayo Liadi aka Ijodee.
The Felabration Afrobics Dance Competition was introduced to the peri-festival events last year. That edition was won by Star Kida, a group of young dancers based in Lagos.
