Call for applications: Multidisciplinary residency programme in the US

The Astronomer in Residence programme at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona offers astronomers, both amateur and professional visual and performing artists, educators, scientists and writers, the opportunity to practice and share their discipline under one of the most pristine night skies in the US.

Through artwork and educational outreach, the Grand Canyon Astronomer in Residence Programme inspires park visitors about the values of dark night skies, spreads awareness to visitors about the threats of light pollution, and explores society’s complex relationships with natural darkness.

There are three residency periods in 2022: April, August, and December. Each one is a minimum of three weeks with a maximum of four weeks. The resident can choose the timeframe they would like to attend. There is a base stipend of $1 250 for the first three weeks, followed by an additional stipend $250 if the applicant chooses to stay an extra week.

Requirements

• Audio (music, singing and composition): Applicants will be required to submit up to 10 minutes of audio and/or video (minimum five minutes) along with any other material that adequately describes the applicant’s work. 
• Performance art (choreography, dance and theatre): Applicants will be required to submit up to 10 minutes of video (minimum five minutes), along with any other material that adequately describes the applicant’s work. 
• Arts professionals (art writers and curators): Applicants will be required to submit sufficient material to evidence the breadth of the applicant’s work and interests, including reviews, essay and catalogue. 

Note: Music composers who want to write a series of nocturnes inspired by Grand Canyon night skies are encouraged to apply. At the end of the residency, they will present a public performance of some famous nocturnes.
