Cameroon: Muzikol Music Awards announce 2021 edition
The organisers of the Muzikol Music Awards (MUMAs) in Cameroon have announced the second edition of the annual event, which will take place later in 2021.
Developed by tech startup ABEBOH, which also owns music market and social networking app Muzikol, the MUMAs celebrate musicians driving the Cameroonian and African music sector.
ABEBOH CEO and MUMAs president Nges Brian says the awards are designed to be an Afrocentric platform for musicians, music professionals and fans.
“We believe that for the African music industry to truly thrive, Africans need to tell our own stories, and control the narratives about our own art,” he said, adding that the MUMAs rely on artificial intelligence to exclude bias and securely manage nominations and applications.
This 2021 MUMAs will present awards in over 30 categories, most of which are specific to the Cameroonian entertainment industry. Last year, the ceremony was held on 13 and 14 November in Douala, with rapper Jovi and Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale winning the Best Album and Best African Artist awards, respectively.
As with the previous edition, the 2021 MUMAs will take place over two days in Cameroon’s largest city. Day 1 is expected to attract about 500 industry stakeholders to network and discuss existing opportunities in the Cameroonian and African music industry. The awards ceremony will take place on Day 2 when some 2 000 attendees are expected to gather for the televised event.
Nominations will open in the coming weeks on the MUMAs official website.
