Cassper Nyovest 'fills up' SA's biggest stadium

Nyovest is now the first South African musician to achieve this feat and comes second only to Irish rockers U2, who in 2011 attracted more than 90 000 fans for the fifth leg of the 360° Tour. 

The event organisers said about 72 000 tickets out of 75 000 were purchased. The rapper, who filled up the 20 000-seater TicketPro Dome in 2015 and sold about 40 000 tickets for last year’s Fill Up Orlando Stadium, shared Saturday's stage with local acts Babes Wodumo, Kwesta, Ricky Rick, A-Reece, Distruction Boyz and Nadia Nakai, among others.

The ‘Doc Shebeleza’ rapper took to Twitter to show his appreciation to those who attended the show.

After the show fans and South African celebrities took to social media to comment on the success of the event.

Former YoTV presenter Hulisani Ravele wrote on Twitter: “To have witnessed this leaves me with chills. A lot can be and should be said about this feat that Cassper Nyovest and his team achieved, my perspective: #FillUpFNBStadium is a testament of what God can do when His power meets a willing heart, a determined spirit and limitless faith.”

Weeks before the event, the ‘Tito Mboweni’ hitmaker struggled to secure sponsors for the show but the Department of Arts and Culture, SABC 1, Budweiser, Cîroc vodka and Standard Bank later came on board to assist him.

Local artists also came to the table to help Nyovest achieve his dream. Black Coffee pledged R60 000 ($4 400) for tickets that he gave away to his fans on a weekly basis, Oskido pledged R50 000 and Somizi Mhlongo offered to emcee the event for free.

The rapper has now announced Moses Mabhida Stadium in the coastal city of Durban as the next fill-up gig sometime next year.
