CD Baby enhances royalty collection and sync options with CDB Boost
Downtown-owned distributor CD Baby has unveiled the latest in a series of artist-centric initiatives called CDB Boost.
According to a statement, the effort is designed to meet the evolving needs of independent songwriters, including mechanical royalty collection via the Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC), non-interactive digital performance royalty collection via SoundExchange and inclusion in sync licensing catalogue.
Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, CD Baby has maintained its position as a market leader in the DIY distribution space for more than two decades. CD Baby currently services more than 2 million creators worldwide boasting a catalogue of 20 million tracks.
The company’s suite of tools and products for independent creators is complemented by the prolific number of artist-centric partnerships the organisation has launched, such as collaborations with Groover, Show.co, HearNow, Laylo and Found.ee.
Established under the Music Modernisation Act, The MLC began administering blanket mechanical licenses to digital service providers (DSPs) in 2021. With CDB Boost, CD Baby will register users’ musical works with The MLC, collecting their digital audio mechanical royalties from eligible streaming and download services in the US from The MLC on their behalf.
Extending beyond the collection of mechanical royalties, CDB Boost adds access to additional sync opportunities to those offered by CD Baby. These new offerings will be implemented alongside a partnership with SoundExchange, which currently collects and distributes digital performance royalties on behalf of more than 650 000 creators. Through CDB Boost, CD Baby will register sound recordings with SoundExchange, collecting royalties on users’ behalf.
“We are immensely excited to launch CDB Boost as a game-changing resource that will help independent songwriters collect two additional sets of royalties they have earned,” CD Baby’s SVP of marketing and community engagement Faryal Khan-Thompson, said. “Our synergistic collaboration with The MLC opens up new opportunities for us to fulfil our mission of serving independent creators by ensuring that songwriters who use our sound recording distribution services also receive their rightful digital audio mechanical royalties, while our inclusion of sync and SoundExchange further strengthens our commitment to fostering musicians’ success. Boost combines innovation, convenience and unwavering dedication to bring change and elevate the independent songwriter community.”
“We are proud of the ongoing advancement of our collaboration with CD Baby,” The MLC head of third-party partnerships Dae Bogan said. “Through the joint efforts of The MLC and CD Baby, Boost users will be able to experience increased accessibility to their digital audio mechanical royalties.”
