Roc Nation merges label and distro divisions
American entertainment company Roc Nation has combined its Roc Nation label and Equity Distribution divisions to establish Roc Nation Distribution, a new artist-centred platform.
Roc Nation Distribution, which is partnered with over 200 digital streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, and TikTok, combines diverse services, allowing artists to maintain independence, master ownership, and creative control, while also providing access to proprietary data analytics and flexible service options.
The move means that Roc Nation Distribution will now sign artists anytime, offering them tools, expertise, and artistic freedom. The company adds that all artists signed to Roc Nation Label will join and benefit from the new Roc Nation distribution structure.
“Roc Nation was founded with an independent spirit and an artist-first mentality,” a statement says. “The formation of Roc Nation Distribution is a natural transition in the music space. The mission is to support and empower independent artists while providing them the tools and services to distribute their music.
“The music industry is undergoing a significant transformation. The rise of direct music distribution channels, combined with the influence of social media, has reshaped the traditional landscape. These developments have created a direct connection between artists and consumers, empowering artists to take greater control of promotion, marketing, creative direction, and business development.”
Following the merger, Roc Nation co-president Shari Bryant, who joined alongside Omar Grant in 2019 after Benny Pough’s departure, has stepped down from her position.
Established in 2008 with Live Nation to support US rapper Jay-Z’s tours and recordings, Roc Nation now offers a broad range of entertainment services, including management, sports, publishing, distribution and the Made In America festival.
Roc Nation’s foray into Africa dates back to June 2016, with the signing of Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage and Congolese singer-songwriter Young Paris, among others.
