David Jay brings Island Dreams to Gambia
Gambian artist David Jay has returned to the Gambia to promote his new album Island Dreams.
Comprising 14 tracks, the album received an Album of the Year nomination at the Wah Sa Halat Music Awards.
“I haven't been in the Gambia for two years,” the Denmark-born artist said. “So I feel to be back home to work on some musical projects and visit families to shoot scenes for his upcoming music video for the album.”
Born Dawda Jatta in July 1986 to a Danish mother and Gambian father, David Jay was raised in a multi-cultural household. His music career kicked off in 2011, the year he released the So Disrespectful mixtape. The project launched his career as a soul and R&B artist.
A year later he released a single 'Africa is the Future’ and then released his maiden EP Evil Circle. In 2013 he released his debut album I am David Jay. Another mixtape followed in 2015.
Alongside local acts, David Jay made his first appearance since his return to the Gambia at the Diaspora Festival at the Independence Stadium last Saturday. His new single ‘My Baby’ features Gee, a Gambian rapper David Jay met for the first time a while ago.
“We met a few years back and we talked about doing a song together,” David Jay said . “Finally, in 2017 we made it happen. As a fan of his music and to show love to my Gambian roots I thought a song with me and him was the right thing.”
“The song,” he said, “is a tribute to all the women who are queens of relationships. [We are] paying respect to the women who deserve it all.”
