Ghanaian popstar Kuami Eugene injured in car crash
Ghanaian pop singer Kuami Eugene is on the mend after a road accident on Sunday.
The incident was confirmed by local journalist Emmanuel Ajarfor Abugri, who was at the scene. According to Abugri, the accident occurred around 11.30pm near Achimota in Accra, where Kuami Eugene’s vehicle collided with a tipper truck on the highway.
“I was behind them so I stopped and rushed to rescue them,” Abugri said. “That was when I realised it was Kuami Eugene.”
There were no fatalities, but injuries were reported. Abugri said the Lynx Entertainment signee, who inked a deal with American distribution company EMPIRE in 2020, appeared to have sustained a broken arm, cuts and a hip injury.
The musician, together with an unidentified male passenger, was immediately rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
Abugri attributed the accident to the inadequate lighting along the N1 Highway and the absence of tail lights on the tipper truck, leading to visibility challenges as it moved slowly when the musician rear-ended it.
Born Eugene Kwame Marfo, Kuami Eugene first rose to prominence after participating in the local music reality TV show MTN Hitmaker. A past Artist of the Year winner at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, he is behind multiple hit songs and three albums, namely Rockstar (2018), Son of Africa (2020) and Love and Chaos (2023).
Although the artist’s management has yet to release an official statement, Kuami Eugene is reportedly in good spirits following treatment for his injuries.
Kuami Eugene’s accident adds to a concerning trend of road incidents in the country. Last September, fellow Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay was involved in a car crash on the Kwabenya highway in Accra under similar circumstances. The collision occurred around midnight when her Jeep Wrangler collided with a tipper truck. In 2018, rising star Ebony Reigns lost her life following a car crash in the Brong Ahafo region.
