Ghanaian trumpeter lands deal with instrument maker Schagerl
Netherlands-based Ghanaian highlife trumpeter Berima Amo recently clinched an endorsement deal with Austrian trumpet maker Schagerl.
Founded in 1961, Schagerl is an exclusive brand whose instruments are handmade by expert craftsmen. The deal makes Amo the owner of the Schagerl Number 19, a custom-made trumpet.
“I hope to inspire and encourage upcoming artists to do everything in excellence and to approach a gig with everything they have, no matter how small a gig is,” Amo told Music in Africa. “The fact that I got this partnership means it’s possible for Africans to be associated with high-end global brands even in our small corner. My keyboardist also got a deal with Nord Keyboards. Hopefully this opens doors for more African musicians.”
Fellow Ghanaian artist Kyekyeku had this to say about the deal: "There are not many musicians from Africa who are getting endorsements by instrument makers. To have one from Ghana is always great news, especially if it's from a maker as prestigious as Schagerl.
“Berima has excelled on the trumpet and is a worthy ambassador of the instrument. This is a sign of trust and belief in the talents as well as skill and musicianship of Berima and musicians from Africa in general."
New EP
The ‘Hallelujah Nyame’ singer last week released a visual EP titled Afrovibes & Rhythms. The EP was recorded in Accra and features Victor Dey Jr (keyboards), Bright Osei (bass), Joseph Bannor (percussion) and Nana Kojo Siebu (percussion).
Commenting on the EP, Amo said: “In an era where there’s a decline in real authentic African music, these sounds are a breath of fresh air for the global world music scene. I am super excited because I have always wanted to make a record without western drums but rather with exclusive African drums. They love what I’m doing with the trumpet and Afrovibes sounds and rhythms.”
Some of Amo’s albums include Journey of the African Drum (2018) and Year of Return (2020).
