The track, a tribute to Kuiyu’s late mother, is available for streaming and download on all major digital platforms.
‘Dúkamake’ is an emotional offering that touches on grief and hope. The song is a conversation between the living and the dead, bridging the gap between this world and the afterlife as Kuiyu bids farewell and offers words of encouragement to a soul embarking on its next journey.
Rendered in Kikuyu, Kuiyu’s native tongue, ‘Dúkamake’ blends soul-stirring incantations “that float spirits skyward” with a steady and reassuring Afro-house rhythm.
“Making this song was a healing experience for me,” Kuiyu said. “It allowed me to confront my grief and express my emotions in a way that felt meaningful and cathartic. I am also excited to showcase my Afro-house sound on this release, which I hope will appeal to a wider audience.”
Despite its bleak theme, ‘Dúkamake’ is ultimately a song of comfort and reassurance, with Nach Mao providing an atmospheric and emotive backdrop for Kuiyu’s poignant vocals.
With ‘Dúkamake’, Kuiyu continues to show why he is one of the most exciting Kenyan artists operating in the music, fashion and theatre scenes.
