Malawi: UMP Festival 2024 unveils six sites

Organised by Chitoliro Productions, these developments seek to showcase the best of urban Malawian and African talent, offering attendees a wide range of activities, performances, and immersive experiences.

The festival sites include the Family Site at Tranquilo Lodge, designed for families with kids’ activities and entertainment, the Fine Arts Site at Fat Monkeys, featuring Malawian art, craft, and culture, the Chitoliro Site, the central hub hosting main stage performances, food vendors, and a marketplace, Cape Mac Lodge, offering a serene space for families and film screenings, the exclusive Gecko Lounge for VIP ticket holders, and the Community Site at Lake Malawi National Park, celebrating Malawian culture and the legacy of Evison Matafale.

“We are incredibly excited to bring these unique festival sites to life at Cape Maclear,” UMP Festival spokesperson Maria Thom said. “Our goal is to create an unforgettable experience that will not only celebrate Malawian and African urban talent, creativity, and community but also provide a platform for artists, creatives, and innovators to shine. We can’t wait to share this experience with our attendees.”

Meanwhile, the organisers have released a line-up of artists who will perform at the festival. They are amapiano artists King Sebastian, Deep London, DJ Kopano, Itsallblaq Blaq, and DJ Wassa Bee. They will be joined by a mixture of local and international artists from different art forms including music, spoken word, theatre, fine arts and dance. The festival will be headlined by South Africa-based Malawian musician Onesimus and performances by other acts like Zinhle Madela (South Africa), Raven Duchess (Zimbabwe), Muhonja (Kenya) and Remnants (Zambia), among others.

UMP Festival has evolved from a humble mini-concert in Blantyre in 2009, featuring a makeshift truck stage, to become a premier entertainment event in Malawi. Founded by Khumbo Munthali and Ken Limwame of Nde’feyo Entertainment, the festival now encompasses a music festival, awards ceremony, fashion show, and media awards. Over the years, the festival has been hosted at various iconic venues, including the former French Cultural Centre, Chancellor College and BAT Ground, solidifying its position as a leading cultural phenomenon.
