Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards announce nominees
The nominees for the Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards (MKHMA) were announced at the Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg on Friday. The awards ceremony will be held at Carnival City in the North West province on 24 November.
Topping the list with three nominations each are DJ Maphorisa and Spikiri. They are followed by DJ Tira, DJ Ganyani and Mshoza with two nominations apiece.
“We started this in 2016 because of the passion and we are still going strong, hence one of our values is to put the artist first,” MKHMA CEO Perfecta Khumalo said.
Meanwhile, a civil movement called #NotInMyNameSA has condemned the award organisers for allowing convicted rapist Sipho ‘Brickz’ Ndlovu to perform at the event on Friday night.
"A convicted criminal should not be allowed to perform at public events, especially a rapist. He violated a woman. How could they give him a platform during Women's Month? Do they care about profit more than women?" #NotInMyName secretary-general Themba Masango told local media.
Democratic Alliance MP Tim Brauteseth wrote on Twitter: “So Kwaito star Brickz will perform at a MKHMA event tonight despite being a convicted rapist. Event organiser Perfecta Khumalo reckons that's ok because Brickz ‘owes’ MKHMA? Profit before ethics? In Women’s Month? Two days after the #TotalShutdown marches?”
Brickz was found guilty of raping a 17-year-old relative in 2013 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was released on bail in April pending an appeal against his conviction.
