The donations, amounting to 60% of the song’s revenue, will be made through the 2Baba Foundation to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). 2Baba visited UNHCR's offices in Abuja last week.
“I have decided to dedicate my time, resources and my voice to support the UNHCR in this massive endeavour of alleviating the sufferings of displaced persons,” he said. “On the 20 June. which is the World Refugee Day, I am going to be commissioning a song and this song will be monetised.”
2Baba spoke about generating awareness of the plight of those forcefully displaced from their homes. The ‘African Queen’ singer insisted that more could be done to assist the homeless, saying “people who have not been hit directly downplay the situation”.
The deputy representative for protection at UNHCR Nigeria, Bridgette Mukanga-Eno, thanked the 2Baba Foundation and said both establishments had begun collaborating last year. Initial donations of about 3.5 million naira ($10 000) were made in February.
“We want people to join in this campaign by downloading the song to use it as their ringtones, caller-back tones,” 2Baba said. “This download, which would cost between N50 to N100, is an opportunity for every Nigerian to contribute in their own little way to the course of assisting displaced persons.”
