Nigerian Fuji great K1 De Ultimate announces foundation for Yoruba music
Nigerian Fuji great K1 De Ultimate today announced the launch of the K1 Marshall Foundation, focused on promoting and investing in Yoruba music and research.
The development was made public alongside the release of his new single titled ‘Announcement’, following Sony Music Publishing West Africa’s revelation in August that it would now represent the works of prominent Nigerian musicians, including the veteran artist.
According to its official website, the foundation will empower new artists, foster cultural exchange, and enhance global understanding of cultural roots through collaborative efforts.
“Through its innovative programmes and partnerships, the foundation aims to ensure the continued vitality and relevance of Yoruba music on the world stage,” the website said.
The non-profit will be led by a board of directors across music, cultural preservation, finance and non-profit management.
“My inspiration for this endeavour springs from a deep love for our musical heritage,” K1 De Ultimate, widely considered a historical innovator of the genre and boasting more than 50 albums, said. “Traveling the world, I’ve seen how Yoruba music unites hearts and crosses boundaries. But I also felt a responsibility to preserve and nurture this legacy.
“Thus, this foundation was born – a vision to celebrate our musical tapestry, empower talents, and foster cultural understanding globally. Join me on this harmonious journey as we honour our past, celebrate our present, and shape our shared future.”
According to recent Spotify data, Fuji, which dominated Nigeria between the 1950s and 1970s, is among classic genres from the West African country currently witnessing a resurgence locally, with K1 De Ultimate among its leading names. The digital streaming platform's numbers show that Fuji experienced growth of 187% between 2022 and 2023, continuing with a 175% increase in the first quarter of 2024. Among its listeners, Gen Z individuals aged 18 to 24 make up 32%, while males dominate the audience, representing 85% of the total.
