Basadi in Music Awards 2022: All the winners

Founded by entertainment entrepreneur and public relations professional Hloni Modise-Matau, the awards are designed to honour and celebrate women in music. They were hosted by rapper and TV presenter Nomuzi Mabena as well as actress and media personality Anele Zondo.

Broadcasters Lamiez Holworthy and Lerato Kganyago were the biggest winners with two award apiece. Holworthy walked away with the DJ of the Year and Music TV Presenter of the Year accolades while Kganyago received the Entertainment Radio Presenter of the Year and Mosadi in Business Achievement awards alongside DJ Zinhle and Lerato Kganyago.

The SAMPRA Amapiano Artist of the Year Award went to Boohle, while the Kaya FM 959 Afropop Artist of the Year trophy was awarded to Phumla Music. Lizwi and Zodwa Mabena won the Sofnfree Dance Artist of the Year and AC Wines Jazz Artist of the Year awards, respectively. Skye Wanda emerged tops in the SAMRO Songwriter of the Year category, while Amanda Maliba and Prudence Mathebula walked away with the Entertainment Journalist of the Year and Radio Producer of the Year awards.

Abigail Kubeka and Yvonne Chaka Chaka were presented with Lifetime Achievement awards in honour of their contribution to the music industry. The ceremony also featured performances from Makhadzi, Nadia Nakai, Kaybee Motsilanyane and Relo of Skwatta Kamp fame.

“The first iteration of the Basadi in Music Awards was incredible to behold,” Modise-Matau said. “It was a phenomenal evening of women celebrating the contribution that has been made by other women. We are proud of our hosts Moozle and Ney the Bae who were fantastic onstage equally, Tshiamo and Mandz who were on red-carpet and backstage duty respectively sizzled. We are also honoured to have presented awards to all our recipients tonight and of course we are so grateful to the performers and guest presenters who brought magic to the inaugural BIMA stage. It was truly an extraordinary experience, and we are looking forward to start planning BIMA2.”
