Participate in survey on the independent music ecosystem in Africa
EclipseXLR and Akum Agency are conducting research to provide a snapshot of the current independent music services ecosystem across Africa, including an overview of the value of the market and service preferences by artists in the African music industry.
“This is the first research project of its kind – a comprehensive, pan-African look at the independent ecosystem across the continent,” EclipseXLR founder and lead strategist Bradley Williams said. “The focus on African music content for local or regional markets and the diaspora is indicative of the opportunities available for artists and labels. However, it is key that we know what value exists and where the gaps lie to address the fundamental requirements for growth.”
The research is being conducted with the aid of a survey to identify the service needs of artists and other music professionals, including physical manufacture, merchandise, live bookings, management, marketing services, PR, promo, master rights management, A&R services, digital distribution, brand management, brand services, neighbouring rights, publishing administration, and royalty administration.
“It is important now more than ever that the independent music industry shares knowledge and identifies ways to work together to grow the African music industry across the continent,” Akum Agency founder Jess White said. “With this survey we are aiming to get a better understanding of the needs from artists, artist managers and record labels across Africa.”
The survey data will be made available in a report published on Music In Africa (www.musicinafrica.net). Additionally, a discussion with key industry players will be held at The Artivist in Johannesburg, South Africa, to unpack the findings of the research.
