SA: Apple Music names DJ Stokie as latest Isgubhu cover star
Apple Music has announced South African amapiano DJ and producer DJ Stokie as its latest Isgubhu cover star.
The announcement follows the release of his latest album Immortal, which is available for streaming on Apple Music. The project is a continuation of DJ Stokie’s forward-thinking sound and a collection of 10 tracks that aim to redefine the amapiano landscape once again.
To celebrate his feature, DJ Stokie has created an exclusive Isgubhu playlist that features his favourite high rotation amapiano tracks to fit almost any occasion.
“I never thought that music could take me this far, and I am honoured to have been selected for Isgubhu,” DJ Stokie told Apple Music. “A big thank you to everyone at Apple Music for all the belief and support. My Isgubhu playlist is the soundtrack to my life and a selection of songs perfect for any moment.”
Born and raised in Mzimhlophe, DJ Stokie’s love affair with music began in the early '90s, as he immersed himself in the rich soundscape of Soweto, drawing inspiration from the likes of Mpopo, Fetsi and Maleven as he embarked on a journey of sonic exploration to hone his craft and shape his unique style.
DJ Stokie’s performances during YFM’s Mad Half Hour competition in 2006 captivated Johannesburg’s youth, propelling him to rising star status in the electronic dance scene. As amapiano gained popularity, DJ Stokie emerged as a key figure, expanding the genre’s reach beyond its East Rand roots and establishing a new hub in Soweto. Now, solidifying his position as the ‘Superman’ of amapiano, DJ Stokie stands as a pioneer, crafting a distinctive sound that resonates with global audiences. His music seamlessly blends infectious rhythms with soulful melodies, speaking to the heart of the streets and cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in the amapiano movement.
Launched in early 2021, Isgubhu is the definitive home of African dance and electronic music on Apple Music and spotlights and elevates the work of African electronic DJs, producers and creatives. Isgubhu houses a collection of playlists, including Spotlight On – a focus on boutique labels like Soul Candi, House Afrika, Stay True Sounds and Uganda’s Hakuna Kulala and Nyege Nyege Tapes, as well as Isgubhu Voices – a focus on the best dance and electronic tracks that feature vocals.
