South African singer Msaki has released a new single titled ‘Statues’ off her upcoming album Platinumb Heart Open, which is set for release on 19 November.

‘Statues’ is available on all major streaming platforms and features local artists Da Capo and Black Motion. The Platinumb Heart Open project will be released concurrently with Msaki's other album Platinumb Heart Beating.
“Musically/artistically the influences that have shaped my palate are always beckoning either to embrace and denounce the conflict in how statues are treated (polish it gold/chip at its nose),” Msaki said.
“Poetic and lived conflict is made worded by a history of thorough and cunning whitewashing, assimilation and cultural erasure. Violence sometimes comes in the form of gifts. Like a suite to Xhosa King.
“I sent the acoustic version of the song to Black Motion. Thinking of their signature drums and how they would add the fight and urgency that I needed to hear. They did their bit and called to ask if it was okay to bring in Da Capo to help sample my entire band and string section. We worked on it together and now exists this 8 minutes long protest dance song.”
