SA: National School of the Arts presents Sho’t Left Broadway musical
The National School of the Arts (NSA) will premiere the Sho’t Left Broadway musical at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg from 10 to 12 March.
Directed and choreographed by Lesego van Niekerk, Sho’t Left Broadway is a showcase production of the NSA, with a script by Tshepo Ratona, musical direction by Siyanqoba Dlungwana, sets and costumes by Sarah Roberts, and lighting by Denis Hutchinson.
The musical is an age-old theme of a talented young girl, Naledi, who has a Broadway dream. The drama plays out in a liminal world between life and death and between auditioning and becoming a star.
“It moves from being gritty and urban to being deeply mystical,” the NSA said. “To unlock her destiny, Naledi is compelled to make peace with the past.”
With a rich musical tapestry of well-loved South African repertoires, including Back of the Moon, Special Star, Shadowlands, Freedom in Coming Tomorrow, Too Late for Mamma and more, Sho’t Left Broadway is about dreams and the complexities of success. It also presents touchstones of a rich South African musical heritage.
The musical features a 30-member cast of NSA pupils from across the performing arts departments and a student band. Presented in partnership with the Joburg Theatre, it forms part of the NSA’s Artists in Residence programme funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme.
