The event coincided with Youth Day in South Africa and will be the culmination of a series of shows that took place at Soda Studio at the weekend.
The concert will present Bubu’s folklore projects, which explore the musician’s identity and inspiration through poetic narrations and her Afro-folk signature sound that fuses soul-jazz and contemporary folk.
The show will include additions from the singer’s Folklore: Chapter 2 repertoire. The intimate setting will also feature a live chat with the musician and performances by live DJs.
The show will start at 7pm CAT and tickets can be purchased here.
Affectionately known as ‘Africa’s Folklore Queen’, Pilani Bubu has graced the stages of festivals and music venues around the world, including in Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Kenya, the US, France and the UK. More recently, she performed at the Live in Accra Jazz Festival (Ghana), Jazz on the Rooftop (Romania) and Ploiesti Jazz Festival (Romania). The musician has released three projects to date, namely Journey of a Heart (2012), Warrior of Light (2016) and Folklore: Chapter 1 (2019), which clinched the Best African Adult Contemporary Album Award at the 2020 South African Music Awards.
Other shows that took place at Soda Studio on 13 June included a live performance by Navi Yuga – a neo-soul, rock, electro and modern jazz inspired collaboration featuring trumpet player Darren English and 2016 Standard Bank Young Jazz Artist Siya Makuzeni.
The two musicians were joined by singer Malebo Mothema, who is known for her 2003 debut album Growth in Africa, with her deeply rooted Pedi style. Another artist featured was famo-electro musician Morena Leraba, whose unique psychedelic and entrancing sound has caught the attention of Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame and electronic producer Diplo.
