Spotify introduces lyric search tool
Spotify on 5 October launched its lyric tool, which lets users search for a song by its lyrics.
The tool, which is now available on iOS and Android, was shared by Spotify designer Lina on Twitter. It comes more than two years after Apple Music launched a similar feature.
The service will be useful in situations where users know the lyrics of a song but not its name. Most users typically search the web for lyrics to find the name of a song, and the move could reduce traffic to lyric sites like Musixmatch and Genius.
Spotify has been enhancing its platform with a number of recent improvements. Last week it upgraded its collaborative playlists feature for friends and family, which allows users to share music and podcasts with each other.
The company’s Made For You section has also seen new changes, with users now navigating music by decade. The Time Capsule playlist – based on listeners' preferred genres, age and country – takes fans back to the music they listened to in the past.
In other developments, Spotify has launched official Weekly Top 50 charts, including the Global Weekly Album Chart, Global Weekly Song Chart, US Weekly Album Chart and US Weekly Song Chart.
The streaming service already offers global and US tracking charts on spotifycharts.com, but this is the first time they’ve been branded as "official". The Spotify Top 50 will be published every Monday and reflect the standard industry release period of Friday to Thursday.
Additionally, Spotify will launch two new Top 10 Debuts charts, one for the US and one for the rest of the world. The charts will reflect the biggest new tracks on Spotify based on the Friday-to-Sunday period. Spotify says it will expand the charts to other territories soon.
With its weekly charts, Spotify edges closer to a domain occupied by the likes of Billboard and the Official Charts Company. However, Spotify‘s charts only cover popularity based on one service rather than a range of platforms.
