Tems shines at 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards
Nigerian singer Tems was the sole African winner at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards after shining in the Best Collaboration category.
Hosted by rapper Fat Joe, the ceremony was taped at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on 30 September and aired exclusively on BET on the morning of 5 October.
Tems won for her appearance on US rapper Future’s ‘Wait For U’, which also features Canadian rapper Drake. The song was also in the running for Song of the Year, but lost out to Latto’s ‘Big Energy’.
The continent’s other reps at the awards, namely Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Ghana’s Black Sherif, South Africa’s Blxckie and Zimbabwe’s Nadia Nakai, all lost in their respective categories.
Black Sherif, Blxckie and Nadia Nakai lost to French rapper Benjamin Epps in the Best International Flow category, while Burna Boy, who was shortlisted in the Video Director of the Year category for his effort on the visuals for ‘Last Last’, lost to US rapper Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem’s ‘Family Ties’. Kendrick Lamar also took home the trophies for Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, Album of the Year and Best Hip Hop Video.
The night’s other big winner, Drake, scored three wins including Best Collaboration and Best Featured Verse.
Meanwhile, Tems was also honoured with a BMI Impact Award at a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel in London on 3 October. She was recognised for her influence on music, joining other young innovators like Raye and Arlo Parks, who have been previously awarded the accolade by the UK-based performance rights organisation.
