US drummer Jeff Siegel to perform in SA, host free workshop at SAST
US veteran drummer Jeff "Siege" Siegel and his sextet will perform at the Just Badela Food and Wine restaurant in Soweto, Johannesburg and the South African State Theatre (SAST) in Pretoria on 21 and 22 June, respectively.
Also an educator, Siegel will be joined by South African trumpeter Feya Faku at both concerts. Siegel and Faku, who have worked together before, initiated this project in 2014 following meetings in New York and, months later, at the Grahamstown Jazz Festival.
In addition to the concerts, Siegel’s sextet will conduct a studio workshop through the US Embassy at the SAST on 19 June. Youths aged between 18 and 25 that are studying music or wishing to expand their musical knowledge are invited to attend the free workshop. Tickets can be reserved by sending an e-mail to pretoriaculturalsection@state.gov.
“Patrons will be sure to experience the high energy post-bop ensemble which features a line-up of compelling, virtuoso musicians with a wealth of experience amongst them,” organisers of the Soweto gig said.
“This collective musical invention combines the dynamic players, along with their stunning arrangements as presented on each of the group’s releases. On piano, the group features Francesca Tanksley, whose work has ranged from touring with the Billy Harper Quartet to performances with the late Melba Liston.”
Siegel and Faku will perform music from their King of Xhosa album, as well as their 2018 release London Live. The King of Xhosa album was named for Faku’s regal nature, as well as his cultural heritage, and the album is a celebration of the link between African music and jazz.
Formed in 2004, the six-piece ensemble features compelling musicians with a wealth of experience between them, namely: Francesca Tanksley (piano), Rich Syracuse (bass), Erica (tenor saxophone) and Fred Berryhill (percussion).
