Win tickets to Grease musical in Joburg
Music In Africa, in partnership with the South African Film, Acting & Theatre Academy (SAFATA), is giving away two double tickets to the world-renowned musical, Grease.
The show will take place at Theatre on the Square in Sandton, Johannesburg, from 31 August to 3 September. This iteration of the musical was directed by the SAFATA’s dean, Anastasia Vorisek, with Amber-Dawn Burnhams directing the music and Zelne Anderson doing the choreography. The lead cast members include Reinier van Zyl, Simoné de Jager, Chloé Cage and Lehlohonolo Gumede, who play original cast Danny Zuko, Sandy Dumbrowski, Betty Rizzo and Kenickie Murdoch, respectively.
Grease follows the story of a leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-next-door Sandy who are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High for her senior year. The couple get involved in a whirlwind of a summer romance before separating. The question that remains is whether the two will withstand the trials and tribulations of teenage life and find true love again.
First performed in Chicago in 1971, Grease was originally written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Case. It featured cheeky characters who dressed in outlandish outfits including pink jackets and leather pants, as well as rock ‘n roll including hits such as ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Greased Lightnin’’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ and ‘You’re the One That I Want’.
The musical achieved the longest run in the history of Broadway with 3 388 performances before it was discontinued in 1980. Since then, it has been performed around the globe, more recently returning to London’s Dominion Theatre. The musical has also been adapted as a feature film.
SAFATA said it chose to take on the musical to give its students an energetic, fun and professional experience of a lifetime. “We have tried to incorporate the unique talents of our students wherever we possibly can, to make this a truly personal journey,” Amy said.
