Zim’s Cindy features Malawi, Ghana artists on remake
Zimbabwean R&B singer Cindy Munyavi has used the services of Rina (Malawi) and Sherifa Gunu (Ghana) for the remake of her single ‘Setter Pace’. The song was released on YouTube last week and is part of Munyavi’s latest album MVC.
The ‘Setter Pace’ remake was rearranged by Munyavi, Rina, Gunu as well as the Zimbabwean singer’s producer Elton Bryce. However, the three singers never worked together under one roof and recorded their parts at separate locations.
Munyavi, whose songs ‘Dai’ and ‘Parare Moyo’ topped the Zimbabwean charts last year, shared the song on Facebook. “When Zimbabwe meets Ghana and Malawi to set the pace. Africa stand up,” she captioned the audio post.
Speaking to Music In Africa, she said: “We decided to put female artists from other countries as a way of exposing Zimbabwean music to other markets. Currently the song is being played in Ghana and Malawi as we speak.
“My producer Elton Bryce engaged Rina and Sherifa to bring their unique flavours to the track. A music video of the song will be shot to be released soon. The general message of the song is about regaining control of one's life and setting the pace. We will announce more collaborations soon.”
Rina told Music In Africa that she took immense pride in working on a pan-African project.
“It's always great to be part of a cross-border song,” she said. “The last time I did one was a Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia collabo. One thing that would have made this collabo greater is if we all did it in one space. I would have loved to sit and chat with the girls. Otherwise these ladies are so professional; everyone sang comfortably on the song as if we had been planning it for a while.”
Responding to what she had learnt from the collaboration, Rina said: “I haven’t actually had a chance to speak to Sherifa, but as for Cindy, she advised me to invest in my brand. She showed me the importance of it and how to make it work for you across the board.”
Rina has in the past collaborated with Judy (Zambia) on ‘Crush’, a song by Zimbabwean R&B musician Cherish.
Music In Africa also caught up with Gunu who had nothing but praise for Munyavi. “I like her voice and she has a lot in her,” Gunu said. “I want more of her and I have no doubt she will take the world by storm. It was a great deal working with her. We are females and most of the time you don’t see female collaborations but male collabos.”
